Premier League Soccer which is scheduled to kick off in February is drawing a large attention from all around. With the likes of star players like Fabio Cannavaro, Robert Pires, Juan Pablo Sorin, Hernan Crespo, Fernando Morientes, Robbie Fowler already confirmed to participate the media attention towards the mega-event is quite understandable.
There is some serious money up for grabs as each icon player will earn a mammoth sum of $600,000 for playing in the 10 week long tournament. This type of tournament is first of its kind as players will be put into auction for the first time ever in the history of world football. A maximum of four foreigners will play along side Indian players (who are not playing in the i-League). Six local players along with six U-21 players are mandatory to be signed in the squad of 25 players. Each of the six teams will have $2.5 million to spend in the first season of the tournament.
The coaches for the six teams will be selected from the list given below:
Peter Reid, John Barnes, Colin Todd, Samson Siasa, Marco Etcheverry, Teitur Thodarson, Milos Rus and Fernando Couto
“Since I had nothing in Europe, why not try something completely unknown? I’ve never been over there,” Pires told French website L’Equipe(www.lequipe.fr).
“I am proud to be the first Frenchman to go and play there. And eight weeks is nothing. If my (club) president likes me, it could be 790,000 euros ($1 million). It is a lot of money. I’m not going to complain about that am I? But I’m not going there as a tourist. It’s a new adventure.” he added.
It is also learnt that (via local news paper Anandabazar Patrika) several other players with the likes of Michael Own and Nicholas Anielka wants to be a part of the league from the coming season. Hernan Crespo and Fernando Morientes are likely to be sold for larger amounts.
Moreover, fresh news coming up is that earlier today MLS midfielder and Ex-USA International Santino Quaranta has left MLS for Premier League Soccer. He played 7 years for D.C. United and was capped at the International level 15 times. Quaranta told the Washington post,“I was very happy not playing anymore and had no ambitions to play at all — none,”
"But then (former D.C. teammate) Jaime Moreno told me about this opportunity and I found out the organizers are serious about it, putting a lot of money into it, and that gave it some meaning.”
He also added that the money he’ll earn during the seven-week competition could equal his salary over two or three MLS campaigns. He made $117,500 last season in D.C.
