Recently I served as the juror for New England Collective II at Galatea Fine Arts, a cooperative gallery in Boston’s gallery-filled South End. I’ve done a fair amount of jurying, but I’ve never followed in the footsteps of a museum curator (Dina Deitsch, associate curator of contemporary art at the DeCordova Museum), who did the job last year. London 2012 unveils Olympic medals
The London 2012 Olympic Games medals are displayed during a news conference in London July 27, 2011.
LONDON - The London Olympic medals were unveiled on Wednesday while the city was celebrating the mark of one year to go until the opening ceremony of the 2012 Games.
The Olympic medals, designed by British artist David Watkins, were unveiled to the world tonight by the British Princess Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise and the LOCOG chairman Sebastian Coe in the presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge and Coordination Commission Chairman Denis Oswald at a special ceremony in Trafalgar Square, central London.
Rogge said, "It is the pinnacle of a sporting career to become an Olympic champion but I am confident that receiving one of these medals will make it all the more special in London next year."
The Olympic medals' circular form is a metaphor for the world. The front of the medal always depicts the same imagery at the summer Games - the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the host city.
On the reverse of the medals, the dished background suggests a bowl similar to the design of an amphitheatre.
The core emblem is an architectural expression, a metaphor for the modern city, or as a geological metaphor as a tough crystalline growth which is deliberately jewel like.
The grid brings both a pulling together and sense of outreach on the design - an image of radiating energy that represents the athletes' achievements and effort.
The River Thames is a symbol for London and also suggests a fluttering baroque ribbon and adds a sense of celebration.
The square is the final balancing motif of the design, opposing the overall circularity of the design and emphasizing its focus on the centre and reinforcing the sense of "place" as in a map inset.
The sport and discipline of the medal-winning athletes will be engraved on the rim of every medal.
Coe hoped that seeing the design of the medals will be a source of inspiration for the thousands of athletes around the world who are counting down the year before they compete at the Games.
In 2012, more than 2,100 Olympic medals will be presented in 302 Olympic victory ceremonies in more than 30 venues over 16 days of competition.
The medals will go into production later this year at Royal Mint's headquarters in Llantrisant, South Wales.

Yao Ming honored as model for youth at farewell ceremony
Former NBA star Yao Ming (L) is awarded a retiring jersey of the Chinese men's national team as its lifetime member during an official ceremony to mark his retirement in Beijing, July 25, 2011. The Chinese character in the background reads, "retire".
BEIJING - Yao Ming retired from the Chinese national basketball team Monday at an unprecedented farewell ceremony held by the Chinese sports governing body, and was highly praised by State Councilor Liu Yandong.
Liu Yandong received Yao at the Great Hall of the People and invited him to a dinner after the meeting. Liu praised Yao as one of the outstanding representatives of the Chinese athletes of the new era.
She said, "Yao Ming's success wins high praises and respects from the international basketball world, and helps the world know more about China. He is a model of the youth."
Liu also wanted Yao to chase higher goal and use his fame to promote the development of the Chinese sports after he retired.
Yao, 31, announced his retirement from the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in front of billions of Chinese fans on July 20 in Shanghai.
This time at the closed-door ceremony that only invited media were allowed in, Yao received a series of top awards and greetings from his old-time teammates, coaches and friends.
In Shanghai, Yao refused to clarify whether he would compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games for China. But Monday's ceremony officially called an end of Yao's day as a basketball player.

Xiao Tian, deputy director of the Genenral Administration of Sports of China, awarded the Olympic Order in Gold of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC) to Yao.
Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), was the other person who received the award without winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Xiao Tian said, "Yao Ming receives overwhelming respects and love from fans around the world not because of his 2.26-meter height, but because of outstanding personality and the high goal of his career. I hope all the Chinese athletes should learn from Yao Ming."
Yao also received an unprecedented retiring jersey of the Chinese men's national team, an award which was set up for him.
Xin Lancheng, the director of the Chinese Basketball Administration Center, said, "Yao Ming is the most outstanding basketball identity in the history of the New China. He is the glorious model of the Chinese basketball players. He leaves to the Chinese basketball the priceless wealth, which will be cherished and inherited by a new generation of the Chinese basketball."
Yao had attended three Olympic Games in 2000, 2004 and 2008 since he was selected into the national team in 1998. He was the first foreign player that was drafted by the NBA as the No 1 overall pick when he was chosen by the Rockets in 2002, and was voted as a member of the first team of the NBA All-Star for eight times.

Phelps goes for 1st individual gold at worlds
Michael Phelps of the US smiles after competing in the men's 200m freestyle semifinal at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai July 25, 2011.
SHANGHAI - Michael Phelps is going after Germany's Paul Biedermann, and this time he's got help.
Having been handed "a pretty good beatdown" by Biedermann in the 200-meter freestyle two years ago in Rome, Phelps gets a long-awaited chance at revenge in the world championships Tuesday.
Biedermann trounced Phelps and took away his world record in Rome, where everyone was wearing the high-tech bodysuits that are now banned.
Phelps and Biedermann won't be going one-on-one, though. They'll be joined by what Phelps described as "a studly field" in the night final at the Oriental Sports Center.
Yannick Agnel of France was the fastest qualifier in the semifinals, with Biedermann second, American Ryan Lochte third, Park Tae-hwan of South Korea fourth and Phelps fifth.
"It's going to be down to the last 50 (meters)," Phelps said. "There are some guys that have front-half speed and some guys that close extremely well. You can probably guarantee that it's going to be a tight group."
Lochte didn't swim the 200 freestyle in Rome, but he figures to be a major presence this time. "It's going to be definitely a dogfight," he said, noting that he and Phelps will swim next to each other.
"I'm going to kind of move over to the lane line and draft off him. Hopefully we can put something together and pull out a 1-2 race."
Biedermann predicted the final will be "big pressure."
After the semis, Phelps said he remained upbeat about his chances. "As long as I have a lane, that's all I need," said Phelps, who will swim in lane two. "I have my strategy that I want to do tomorrow. I tried to conserve as much as I could."

Cielo seals title 4 days after doping ruling
Brazil's Cesar Cielo Filho cries after winning the men's 50m butterfly final at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, July 25, 2011.
SHANGHAI - Cesar Cielo said a day ago that his doping ordeal was behind him. On Monday, the emotions of the past month came back in full force when the Brazilian won the 50-meter butterfly at the world championships.
Cielo propped himself up on a lane rope, looked up at the scoreboard and began sobbing.
Last week, Cielo was cleared of wrongdoing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport following an emergency hearing in China.
"It's been a tough time for me, something that I didn't expect at all for my career," Cielo said. "But I had to deal with it and it feels like the biggest relief of my life to overcome something like that and be able to compete."
Cielo, who will also attempt to defend his 50 and 100 freestyle titles later this week, finished his race in 23.10 seconds. Matthew Targett took the silver in 23.28 and Australian teammate Geoff Huegill, who has come out of a four-year retirement, took the bronze in 23.35.
Cielo and three teammates tested positive for furosemide, a banned diuretic, at a meet in Rio de Janeiro in May. After the Brazilian swimming federation gave Cielo a warning, swimming governing body FINA appealed the decision to the CAS, which upheld the Brazilian ruling.
Cielo said he consumed the drug in a contaminated batch of a food supplement he regularly uses.
The ruling prompted an outcry from other swimmers, who called it unfair, and there were some whistles in the crowd after his victory.
"This gold medal has a different feeling from the other ones," Cielo said. "This was the hardest I've had in my life. It was a time to test not just my talent in swimming but how much I could take and still stand up so I'm really proud of myself for being able to do so.
Cesar Cielo of Brazil cries during a ceremony with Australia's bronze medalist Geoff Huegill and silver medalist Matthew Targett after winning the men's 50m butterfly final at the 14th FINA World Championships in Shanghai, July 25, 2011.
Cielo cried again during the medal ceremony, and the capacity crowd at the Oriental Sports Center responded by applauding in encouragement.
"It's difficult for him," Targett said. "I'm not going to speak for my friend, but I lived with the guy and I know exactly what he's going through. At times like this, you find out who your real friends are."
Targett called Kenyan racer Jason Dunford, who finished seventh, a "sore loser" for allegedly putting his thumbs down after the race. "I'm really happy for him," Targett continued. "And if I was ever to get beaten by anybody I would want it to be a friend."

Gervinho marks Arsenal debut with double
Côte d'Ivoire international Gervinho marked his Arsenal debut by scoring both goals for the Premiere League club in a 2-1 win over Bundesliga side Cologne in a pre-season friendly.
Gervinho, signed in the summer from French champions Lille, played just 29 minutes before he was substituted following a collision with Cologne goalkeeper Michael Rensing. His first goal came after a fine pass from Jack Wilshere before a Theo Walcott cross set-up the second.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger, who is under pressure for failing to make big signings since the end of last season, was delighted that his one major purchase so far made such an immediate impact.
"Gervinho had a good start and that is always important for his confidence," Wenger said. "He has shown his qualities. He has quick movement behind the defence, the timing of his movement is great and he is easy to find.
"We have seen what he can bring to the team and he contributes to the high pace we have in the team. We played at a good pace in the first half and looked dangerous. We took many risks and were exposed to counter-attacks but, overall, I am happy."
