Super Cup 2011
East Bengal 9-8 Salgaocar (0-0 after Full Time)
East Bengal came out as deserved winners of the Super Cup 2011 finale after a heart wrenching finish which saw as many as 10 shots taken in the tie-breaker by each team. The match ended 9-8 after both team missed once.
Karanjit Singh was in Splendid form |
Alan Gow, tested the Salgaocar Defence with his freekicks everytime |
It was Salgaocar's Jashpal Parmar who made the first miss when Gurpreet Singh blocked one shot, but when it mattered the most, East Bengal could not capitalize as Ravinder missed his shot as Karanjit came to his teams rescue. Then came the sudden deaths where both team managed to score for four consecutive times as scoreline read 8-8, but then came a miss from Salgaocar's half with Gurpreet making another save after coming close to making several shots. It was Meetei who made a mistake with his shot hitting the crosspiece. Saikat Saha made no mistake in putting the ball inside the net when the moment of glory was knocking at the doors.
Thus the match ended, 9-8 to East Bengal's favor and thus bringing the first trophy to Kolkata. The win will definitely boost the confidence of the team before the i-League.
