Sorry As I Know it has been much too long... New News to share on Sharon: Sharon's friend Judy Gutowski Passes and New Art from Kerstien Matondang for Xmas!

I wanted to apologize to all the fans of Sharon that I have not gotten back to blogging sooner!

I certainly have missed everyone and of course, I miss Sharon.  This blog makes me feel at least a little close to who she really was.  I often reflect on all of the wonderful traits she had...

Anyway, back to some news...
Adam Bardach

My thoughts and prayers go out to Adam Bardach and to his family for the loss of his mother, Judy Wilson Gutowski Evans.  You'll remember that Adam's father is Gene Gutowski.  He and Judy were married when they knew Roman and Sharon.  Sharon was a very close friend to Judy and Gene.  Adam told a friend of mine that recently Judy passed away on Thanksgiving of this year.  I am truly sorry for your loss.

Sharon and Judy were the greatest of friends and Judy, I am told, missed Sharon very much.  You'll remember that Judy inherited Sharon's engagement ring from Roman when Sharon died.

RIP to Judy!

Adam Bardach recently has done a new documentary called "Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston" about the legendary fashion designer.  Here are some photos from the Premiere:

Producer Bardach with 'Halston' director Whitney Sudler-Smith.

The two at the Tribeca Film Festival.

I found this about the documentary:

UltraSuede: In Search of Halston

The new documentary by Whitney Sudler-Smith takes viewers on a fun-and-fact-filled journey through the life and times of the country’s first celebrity designer. "Ultraswede: In Search of Halston" will have its World Premiereon Friday, April 30th at the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival.

Arguably, no one represents the 1970s quite like legendary designer Halston, and Sudler-Smith’s film, two years in the making, combines a prodigious amount of archival footage, (meticulously researched and sourced from every possible outlet), and stunning still photographs brought to thrilling life with imaginative 3D effects.

More importantly, there is a colorful array of interviews with various cohorts, commentators, witnesses, and survivors of Halston’s empire: Andre Leon Talley of Vogue, his best friend, Liza Minnelli; two of his leading models, Anjelica Huston and Pat Cleveland; fellow designers Diane von Furstenberg, Stephen Burrows, Naeem Khan, and Ralph Rucci; musicians Billy Joel and Nile Rogers (both of whom used “Halston” as a lyric in hit songs); journalists Bob Colacello and Glenn O’Brien (of Andy Warhol’s Interview), Jim Moore of GQ, Cathy Horyn of the New York Times, and Amy Fine Collins of Vanity Fair, among others.

Ultraswede: In Search of Halston" is produced by Adam Bardach, Anne Goursaud and Nicholas Simon; written by Anne Goursaud, and executive produced by Mark Urman and Shawn Simon. It will be presented as a gala special event under the festival’s “Tribeca Talks” rubric and will be followed by a panel including Talley, Smith, Cleveland, and Rucci, among others.

My best to you, Adam on your recent project and I am looking forward to more in the future.

Quote of the Week, Gene Gutwoski talks about Sharon and More Rare Finds

The quote of the week is a short one but very true:

"She was so sweet and talented.  Taken before her time."  Barbara Parkins

Recently, I got in touch with Gene Gutowski's son Adam to see if I could possibly talk to his mother or father about Sharon?

His reply:  I’d be glad to give your contact info to my parents (yes, Judy Wilson is my Mother)... They were both very close to Sharon and, as you can imagine, it’s a sensitive subject. I’ll be happy to pass it along.  All the best, Adam

I did not hear back from Judy but Gene replied briefly and said:

My son Adam passed on your exchange with him.  I would be very glad to share my feelings about Sharon.  She was truly a wonderful spirit.  I was there when her romance with Roman started on location in Italy for "The Fearless Vampire Killers."  There was an incredible love they had for one another.  I was best man at their wedding which was such a beautiful occasion.  I and, my former wife, Judy, lived with her and Roman in a house on the beach in Santa Monica for a time.  I have many happy memories of our time spent there.  I took Roman to Los Angeles to the funeral after she was so brutally murdered.  You probably know that.  It was such an immense tragedy... beyond words.
Sharon and Gene from his Polish Biography.  (Thanks to Andrea for this).

I remember David Bailey took some wonderful pictures of her and Roman.  I have a few of them and recall that they were both impressed with his work.  Please stay in touch and best regards, Gene.

Of course I thanked him for his time.  If I hear anything else I will let you know. :)

Here are some more rare finds that I have come across on Sharon:

A rare French find for '12 + 1'.

Rare cover magazine also from France with Sharon.  (Thanks to Muriel for bringing this to our attention.)

A rare Terry O'Neill original vintage photo that is on Ebay now.

I hope all of you are enjoying your holiday!

New Sharon Tate Article, Polanski Wins Some Damages, and Love Story Author Passes

I found a few interesting things in this otherwise rather dramatic, gossipy magazine called Screenplay for December 1969

Hollywood's Reign of Terror -- The Tate - Lennon Murders.

(The vintage magazine discusses both the Tate murders and that of the Lennon Sisters family murders.  I'll focus on Sharon for obvious reasons and because the article is rather lengthy and you have to take a grain of salt when you read it.)

"I love America, and I love working, but I am frightened by the violence.  Nowhere else in the world--Italy, France, England--do you see such violence!"

These were the words of Roman Polanski, the brilliant 36 year-old Pole who directed Rosemary's Baby.

Roman Polanski's beautiful movie star wife, 26-year-old Sharon Tate, was stabbed to death, along with their unborn son and three of their closest friends, in their Benedict Canyon Hollywood Mansion, early on Saturday morning, August 9th.  Sharon (as were the Lennon Sisters' dad) were buried at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Cemetery.

The Polanskis enjoyed all the wild excitement of Hollywood's hip youth scene.  In fact, he was almost too exciting for her, and their first encounter in London in 1965 was almost their last.  He invited her to dinner in his home, when she came to him for a part in his horror-comedy, The Fearless Vampire Killers.  In part of a screen test, he suddenly reared up behind her, wearing a Frankenstein mask and making horrible monster noises in his gloomy, shadowy dining room.  Naturally, she screamed hysterically.  He decided that she had expressed just the right reactions for the role.  She, in turn, decided that the long-haired director was the craziest nut she'd ever met!

But soon she realized that his eccentricity was that of genius.  They fell deeply in love, and by the time she went back to Hollywood to star in Valley of the Dolls, she was telling everyone about the affair.  "He is my first real, serious romance!" she exclaimed.  "He is so strong, so true, so honest.  But at the same time he leaves me free to be myself.  He's also very sexy, because what makes a man sexy to me is vitality and intelligence."  They had a beach house in Hollywood, where they lived together, and they enjoyed going into the desert to race his car.  They always kept a home in London, too.  Sharon loved the new freedom and tolerance there.

For the first time in three years, Sharon insisted, "I'm not going to spoil a great affair by turning it into a mediocre marriage, for convention's sake."  She had been born in Texas, but as the daughter of a career army officer, Colonel Paul Tate, she was educated in Europe.  She explained, "I have the European attitude towards sex and life in general.  Everything is so much more liberal and open over there."

By January 20, 1968, they had decided they could have a great marriage too.  The wedding was held in a London registry office, with a star-studded reception in the Playboy Club.

Instead of competing with each other, the Polanskis were always trying to help each other succeed.  Sharon often visited the set of Rosemary's Baby, the movie which made him America's most famous director.  Valley of the Dolls failed to make her an equally-famous star, even though she'd been built up before hand as "the next Marilyn Monroe," and possessed a perfect, immaculate beauty.  But Roman always had enthusiastic faith in her.  He tried to get her the role of Rosemary, then encouraged her to appear in The Wrecking Crew with Dean Martin, and he sent her to Rome to make 13 Chairs.  They celebrated her return with a gala party; all the guests noticed how happy the Polanskis were and how much in love.

She went with him to London, where he was working on The Day of the Dolphin.  He ran into a problem there.  When her little Yorkshire terrier, 'Saperstein,' was run over by a car, Roman couldn't find a way to break the sad news to the tender hearted girl.  He finally told her that her pet had run away, as he handed her an identical dog.  After Sharon died, Roman kept repeating, "She was such a good person."  That wasn't just a husband's opinion.  Even a notorious woman-hater like Mort Sahl described her, during her lifetime as "a very nice girl."

Sharon and Roman were looking forward very eagerly to the birth of their first child.  They hardly ever talked about anything else.  Sharon left London a few days early, by boat, because she didn't want to fly during her eighth month.  Roman planned to be home in time for the birth, and he hired an Irish nanny for the child.  He was also looking forward to his own birthday on August 18, because Sharon was planning another big party for him.

Because he didn't want her to wait for him all alone, he asked some friends to come and stay with her, Voytech Frykowski, who'd been his movie partner in Poland, and Frykowski's girl friend, Abigail Folger, who was doing social work in Watts, even though she was the heiress to the coffee company.  The famous men's hairstylist Jay Sebring, who had been Sharon's boy friend before she met Polanski, was also visiting them on the fatal night.  They became her companions in death.

(There is a complete rundown of the murders and how the victims were found.  There is also a mention of drugs and black magic and the article says: "Roman had a brilliant, original, searching mind and his movies all showed a strong interest in the macabre.  At the Polanski's last party, Sharon had wore a transparent white gown... While Sharon and Roman were a very devoted couple, they were also a very unconventional one."  I'd take some of that with a grain of salt.)

The shocking facts gave rise to rumors.  Roman had to defend his dead wife's honor in the midst of his own grief.  Through his partner, Gene Gutowski, he sternly told the press, "Jay Sebring was a close and dear friend of both Sharon and Roman.  It was wrong to suggest that there was any romantic involvement at this time between Sharon and Jay.  Sharon and Roman were a storybook couple, deeply in love.  She was very devoted to him, and he was very protective of her."  Jay originally planned to bring his own girl, Connie Kreski, a starlet and Playboy Magazine Playmate of the Year.

Gutowski also insisted, "There was no party going on, and Sharon and the others were rational, nice people, not Hippies or cultists.  What happened to them could have happened to anyone, as it did to the Clutters in Kansas."

(There is more falseness in the next part about mutilated bodies that are just not true, so I will not include them here.)

Roman Polanski was obviously in no condition to say anything to the press himself.  It was hours before he was composed enough to talk to the police.  He had taken the first plane from London, but he was under deep sedation from the time Gutowski gave him the news, and he cried, "They have killed my wife and baby!"

The drugs did not dull his grief.  He sobbed through Sharon's funeral, and knelt to kiss the casket, as Sharon's mother tried to comfort him by sadly patting his head.  By the time he arrived at Jay's funeral, he ws so near collapse that he needed two friends to support him.  In his bitterness and heartbreak, his is now planning to leave Hollywood forever, and stay in London.

Both his love and his fear (of America) have been justified.

He came to us as an immigrant, bringing his talent and energy--they won him a beautiful movie star wife, exciting friends, and a Hollywood mansion--and thus he helped prove that our cherished American dream can still come true.  How shameful it is that for Roman Polanski, the great American dream has ended in a nightmare.

(The next part is all about the Lennon Sisters and their family and their father, who was shot to death.)

(The article also mentions the LaBianca's murders and how Garretson had been taken into custody but since there was no evidence to be found against him, he was released.  Speaking about the LaBianca's the article says, "So a third family--not related to show business at all--helped to prove the dreadful moral of Hollywood's reign of terror--that violence can strike anyone, anywhere, regardless of his character or way of life.")

The Polanskis and the Lennons--the most modern and the most conventional--the most daring and the most devout--the most glamorous and the most typical--neither were spared.

If you want to write condolence letters to the bereaved, expressing your own sympathy, you can send them to Roman Polanski, c/o Rogers, Cowan & Brenner Public Relations, 250 N. Canon Drive, Beverly Hills, California, and for the Lennon Sisters, c/o Jay Bernstein Public Relations, 9110 Sunset, Beverly Hills, California.

Apparently, Roman Polanski won some damages in his case against the press but not as much as he had hoped:

Not sure if Roman and Sharon knew him but another great from the Sixties has passed away.  "Love Story" Author Eric Segal dies at 72:

More From Yesterday, Rare Magazine Covers, Rare Movie Poster, & Another recommendation for "Eye of the Devil"

Speaking of Deneuve from yesterday, here are two nice photos I found of her and Roman Polanski:

The one below features Gene Gutowski:

And here are three photos of Catherine's daughter, Chiara Mastroianni (also daughter of non other than the great Actor Marcello Mastroianni).  Makes you wonder what Sharon's daughter would have looked like if she had one?

Here are two very rare Sharon Tate magazine covers I found:

And here is a very rare foreign poster for "Fearless Vampire Killers" that I have never seen before:

Here is another blog that discusses "Eye of the Devil" and has a photo:

Actress Withdrawls Name from Polanski Petition Plus Vintage RS Article

The news for Roman just seems to get worse, unfortunately.  It does not appear that his current problems are going to go away any time soon.  Here is an article talking about petitions and what kind of response they are getting:

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/news/thompson-talked-out-of-support-for-polanski-by-19yearold-student-1816553.html

Also, I found a lengthy article and interview with Roman done by Rolling Stone for July 18, 1974.  Mainly, it talks about the making of 'Chinatown' but it also mentions Sharon.

The article is called "The Restoration of Roman Polanski" by Tom Burke.

There is an odd paragraph where Polanski says: "Changing a series of shots can also ruin a picture, for example there is my 'The Fearless Vampire Killers', made in Europe, but a man called Gene Gutowski was producer and he convinced me that he should be in charge of the final cut for the U. S. audience because he knows U. S. audiences.  Okay, so I trust him and he takes my movie away, cuts 20 minutes from it, redubs it and changes it and changes music around, then adds a little cartoon at the beginning to explain what it's about because now, after the cuts, nobody understands it anymore!  My version has played almost constantly in Europe, since it opened some seven years ago!  His version, which plays here, is a disaster, I tell you it made more money in Formosa than it has ever made in the U.S. and Canada put together!  They show it here (in America) on television all the time, I get the shakes it is so bad, but it is out of my control."

He goes on to say that is why he and producer Bob Evans make sure they get final cut approval for "Chinatown."  My question is: wasn't it Martin Ransohoff that did this to Polanski's 'Vampire Killers?'  I always thought Polanski and Gutowski were great friends?  Polanski's own autobiography supports this.  The only thing I can think of is that the interviewer got the names confused somehow?

Evans mentions how hard it was after Sharon's death saying: "We'd gotten close.  He is 'not' an easy person, as I suppose you know now (after interviewing him)--very difficult to crack, but once you do, there is no man or filmmaker like him.  We've been through a helluvalot together.  Jesus, my marriage (and breakup); and the post funeral of Sharon was here at this house, meaning that everyone came back here afterward.    Roman stayed with me here the for a good while; it was a horrendous time."

At one point during the interview session with Polanski, the reporter asks him about his late wife.  "We'll talk about it," he says.  "But not today.  It is too nice out."

Later, when he does talk about Sharon this is what he says: "Meeting Sharon?  When I hired her for 'The Fearless Vampire Killers', of course.  We got married in 1968.  By the summer of '69 she was very pregnant and I was very busy, working on a film script in London.  It seemed best she went back to the house we rented in LA and I could stay on and finish the film and get back to LA as soon as I could.  Everyday we would talk on the phone.  When it rang one day, I thought it was her but it was my agent in LA.  He was crying.  My reaction first was, naturally, no reaction, stunned disbelief, I suppose you call it.  Friends came to me quickly, I think we went out for a long walk, they called a doctor who gave me something, a shot and I slept.  Then I took a plane to LA. You must understand, there is much which now I cannot recall, which I have blocked out of recollection.  After the funeral, I stayed on in LA because I had the ludicrous notion that finding the murderer would somehow ease my grief.  I worked very close with the police for a long time, who, I have got to tell you, were quite human and wonderful.  I had no idea cops could be like this.  Sharon's parents worked with them too.  Yes, I am still in touch with the Tates, naturally.  What a question!  I don't think this is known: that just before the police found Manson and all of them, I offered a reward, $20,000 for public information leading to the arrest of the killers.  It wasn't collected, no.  As soon as the police discovered Manson, I get the hell out of LA immediately, I could take no more, there was no more point to staying.  I had begun then to accept Sharon's death, which I'd never really done before, which is really all that matters to me about it all anymore, that she is gone.  The worst started: I went to Switzerland and tried to ski and become very jet-set, the idea of work was impossible.  Everybody kept saying to me, get to work immediately.  Idiotic.  Only Stanley Kubrick understood, he told me, 'You cannot and must not work now.' "

The reporter then writes: "It is clear he wishes to get up, to pace the room, break it up perhaps. but he remains quietly seated and purposefully motionless."

Roman goes on to say: "See I attempted for awhile there, before starting 'Macbeth', to become a hedonist, as the papers said we all were.  Jesus, I hated the press for a long time after it, because, I swear this, although I already knew how the press exaggerates, especially in sensational matters, I could not believe what was being printed about Sharon!  My God, 'The Sharon Tate Orgies.'  Interviews given by people that Sharon and I never met!  I swear I could not find one word of truth in any story printed about us anywhere, and I would not and could not lie about this fact!  If there had been anything to any of that shit, I would admit it to you now.  My God, it was, is, unbelievable.  The murder was all a horrible mistake, you know.  Manson's people were after somebody else entirely, who'd been renting the house before us!  What was actually going on there was this: Gibby Folger and Voyteck were staying in the house to keep Sharon company, we'd agreed on this, they were good friends and the place was big and it seemed a good idea since she was eight and half months pregnant.  Gibby was working very hard as a social worker, getting up at dawn everyday to go to work in Watts and studying speed-reading at night.  I was planning a film involving dolphins--'The Day of the Dolphin'--and Voyteck wanted very much to work in movies and was devoting lots of time to research on dolphins for me.  Jay Sebring was another friend who came up often, but never stayed all night one night at the house.  I was dying to finish work and get there; the last time I talked to Sharon, only hours before her murder, I told her I'd get there the following Monday even if work wasn't finished.  Things had been so perfect between us: we'd had some nice times in that LA house.  Sharon would cook dinner for friends and after we'd all sit outside and look at the sky, the constellations, and talk about everything.  Just quiet, pleasant evenings.  Sharon and I would make plans, we had a wonderful future extensively mapped ..."

The reporter closes this part of the interview adding: "Still he sits perfectly calm, though his eyes are such that it is uncomfortable to meet them."

It makes you wonder what all they talked about and planned?  A life together, possibly more children, making 'Tess' and the western and science fiction film we have recently heard about from other articles here?  Such a shame we will never know?  Although I am glad to see him with Emanuelle and their children together now, perhaps Polanski would not being having any of his current problems if Sharon had lived?
