- BUSINESS NOT SHOWBIZ

* "HÖCKI" KISS THE GOLDEN BOY

"Academy Awards", mit viel, viel, viel, viel glamourfaktor, live ab 01.10h ... business or showbiz ???

Liverpool, Rangers make Europa League's last 16

Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt (L) celebrates his goal against Sparta Prague during their Europa League round of 32 second leg soccer match in Liverpool, Northern England Feb 24, 2011.

LONDON- British sides Liverpool and Rangers grabbed late goals to sneak into the last 16 of the Europa League on Thursday, while Villarreal eliminated Napoli to end Italian representation in the competition.

Liverpool, which has won Europe's second-tier cup competition three times, required an 86th-minute header by Netherlands forward Dirk Kuyt to beat Sparta Prague 1-0 in their last-32 second leg and progress by the same scoreline on aggregate.

United States midfielder Maurice Edu's close-range finish in injury time earned Rangers a 2-2 draw at Sporting Lisbon, with the Scottish champions going through on away goals after the first leg finished 1-1 at Ibrox.

Rangers will next play Dutch league leader PSV Eindhoven, which defeated Lille 3-1 to advance 5-3 on aggregate.

Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi scored the winner for Villarreal in its 2-1 second-leg victory over Napoli, with the Spanish club going through by the same score.

Other leading sides to advance on Thursday were Manchester City, Ajax, Zenit St. Petersburg and Bayer Leverkusen. FC Porto and CSKA Moscow qualified for the last 16 earlier this week.

Kuyt glanced home an inswinging corner from Raul Meireles, sparing Liverpool the need for extra time at Anfield.

"It took us a while to score but 1-0 is enough to go through so we're happy with that," Kuyt said. "It was a hard game and we should have finished it off earlier, but at the end of the day a win is all that counts."

Liverpool, which will play Braga in the second knockout round, dominated the second leg but could not find a way past goalkeeper Jaromir Blazek until Kuyt's late strike.

Yannick Djalo's goal seven minutes from time put Sporting 3-2 ahead on aggregate in its entertaining match against Rangers.

Substitute David Healy, though, slid in a cross that Edu couldn't fail to finish off from one meter out, allowing the the 2008 finalists to progress.

"There wasn't much between the teams in the second half at all," Rangers manager Walter Smith said. "With the circumstances of getting the goal, we are pleased to progress."

Second-half goals from Balazs Dzsudzsak, Jeremain Lens and Marcelo put PSV through at the expense of French league leader Lille, which took a 3-2 aggregate lead when Pierre-Alain Frau opened the scoring in the 22nd minute.

After a goalless first leg between Villarreal and Napoli, the Italian side went ahead after 22 minutes of the return match when Marek Hamsik headed underneath goalkeeper Diego Lopez. Napoli's fans spilled onto the field at El Madrigal Stadium when a barrier collapsed in the ensuing celebrations.

Borja Valero set up Nilmar's equalizer for Villarreal in the 43rd before feeding Rossi for the winner in the second minute of first-half added time.

Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko scored twice and midfielder Yaya Toure added a third as emerging English giant Man City eased past Aris 3-0 in the second leg and on aggregate.

"I am very happy, it's the first time I have scored two goals in one game for Manchester City," said Dzeko, who has netted four in total since joining the big-spending northwest club from Wolfsburg in the January transfer window.

Dynamo Kiev was next for City after the Ukrainian side breezed to an impressive 8-1 win over Besiktas over the two legs.

Serbia forward Miralem Sulejmani grabbed a brace for Dutch club Ajax _ a four-time European champion _ in its 2-0 victory over Anderlecht, sealing a 5-0 win overall. Ajax next plays Spartak Moscow, which went through at the expense of Basel.

Zenit, which beat Rangers in the 2008 final in Manchester, rallied from a two-goal aggregate deficit to eliminate Swiss side Young Boys 4-3 and stay on course for a second Europa League title in four years.

Ammar Jemal put the visitors 3-1 up in the two-leg series but Danko Lazovic and Sergei Semak scored on either side of the break and Roman Shirokov added a third in the 76th to ease the Russian side through.

Simon Rolfes and Michael Ballack scored second-half goals for German side Leverkusen in a 2-0 win over Metalist Kharkiv that completed a 6-0 aggregate win.

FC Twente, Paris Saint-Germain and Benfica also went through to the last 16 on Thursday.

Nets land Williams in three-player trade with Jazz

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams (8) shoots over San Antonio Spurs forward DeJuan Blair (45) during the second half of their NBA basketball game in Salt Lake City, Utah, Jan 26, 2011.

NEW YORK - The struggling New Jersey Nets acquired All-Star point guard Deron Williams from the Utah Jazz in a three-player trade after missing out in their pursuit of Carmelo Anthony.

The Nets, who were openly interested in acquiring Anthony until his trade to the New York Knicks, agreed to send guard Devin Harris, forward Derrick Favors, two first-round draft picks and cash to Utah for Williams.

"We are very excited to add a player with the caliber of Deron Williams to our roster," Nets general manager Billy King said in a statement.

"He is one of the premier point guards in the NBA, and his skill and talent level will bolster our franchise as we continue to build towards our goal of becoming a championship-caliber team."

The 26-year-old Williams, selected third overall by Utah in the 2005 NBA Draft, is averaging a career-high 21.3 points per game this season along with 9.7 assists and 3.9 rebounds.

Favors, the third overall pick in last year's NBA draft, is averaging 6.3 points and 5.3 rebounds this season.

Harris, who spent three-plus seasons in Dallas before being traded to New Jersey in 2008, is averaging 15.0 points and a career-high 7.6 assists in this campaign.

Utah Jazz guard Deron Williams (R) drives to the basket past Los Angeles Lakers guard Derek Fisher during Game 3 of their NBA Western Conference semi-final playoff series in Salt Lake City, Utah, in this May 8, 2010 file photo.

Parting ways

Despite parting ways with Williams, the Jazz are confident former All-Star guard Harris will help the team who are clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

"We feel that we've addressed a current need at point guard with Deron's departure, as well as the future with draft picks and a big man," Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said.

"To do so we had to give up an All-Star, but we feel like this is a win for both sides."

The Nets have made pitches to several leading NBA players since Russian majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov purchased the team last year.

New Jersey, who set a record for the worst start to an NBA campaign last season and have stumbled to a 17-40 record this time round, talked with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh last year when they were free agents before shifting their focus to Anthony.

Anthony, a four-times All-Star who led the Denver Nuggets to seven consecutive playoff appearances, was the centerpiece of a nine-player blockbuster trade with the Knicks that was confirmed on Tuesday.

Arsenal win overshadowed by injuries

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Arsenal's Sebastien Squillaci (C) celebrates with team mates Johan Djourou (L) and Sami Nasri after scoring a goal against Stoke City during their English Premier League soccer match at the Emirates Stadium in London Feb 23, 2011.

LONDON- Arsenal beat Stoke City 1-0 to cut Manchester United's Premier League lead to one point on Wednesday but the win was overshadowed by injuries to Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott.

Sebastien Squillaci, who was playing in place of the injured Laurent Koscielny, was the unlikely match-winner when he headed home his first Premier League goal after only eight minutes.

However, Fabregas went off with a hamstring injury after 15 minutes and Walcott was stretchered off with a damaged ankle 20 minutes from time and will miss Sunday's League (Carling) Cup final against Birmingham City at Wembley.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told reporters: "Theo Walcott has an ankle sprain and he is out. For how long, I don't know, but he is definitely out of Sunday.

"Fabregas has a hamstring problem. We will assess that tomorrow. It is impossible to see how serious it is tonight. We will know tomorrow." With Arsenal chasing four trophies in the Premier League, League Cup, Champions League and FA Cup, Wenger will be concerned about a lengthening injury list.

Dutch winger Robin Van Persie and Koscielny are already doubtful for Wembley, and although Fabregas went off as a precautionary step, he will be desperate to play against Barcelona in the Champions League at the Nou Camp on March 8.

Walcott's woes looked more serious after he was carried off the Emirates Stadium pitch following a challenge from Stoke's Dean Whitehead. As he fell, his left ankle caught and twisted in the turf and he looked to be in some pain.

The three points left Arsenal with 56 points from 27 games, while United are on 57 with a game in hand. Manchester City are a distant third with 49 points from their 27 games.

United were in action in France on Wednesday, drawing 0-0 with Olympique Marseille in their Champions League last-16 first leg match.

Arsenal asserted their dominance early in the game when Walcott hit the post in the opening minutes before Squillaci, guilty of some erratic performances this season, scored after a cross from Nicklas Bendtner following a Jack Wilshere corner.

While Stoke's defenders ball-watched, Squillaci ran in to head home from close range.

After Fabregas went off, Arsenal appeared to lose some cohesion and Stoke went close to an equaliser with John Carew, Jermaine Pennant, Ryan Shawcross and Robert Huth all having good chances to score.

However, Arsenal's defence held firm and Stoke were beaten away for the fifth successive league match leaving them 10th in the table.

Real denied victory by Gomis after Benzema goal

Karim Benzema (C) of Real Madrid shoots to score against Olympique Lyon during their Champions League soccer match at the Gerland stadium in Lyon Feb 22, 2011.

LYON, France - Real Madrid were denied victory when Olympique Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis struck late to earn his side a 1-1 draw in a Champions League last-16 first-leg match on Tuesday.

Real looked on course to end a run of three successive defeats at the Stade Gerland when substitute Karim Benzema scored with almost his first touch against his former club midway through the second half.

Lyon seized the early initiative with the lively Michel Bastos shooting over and Real rarely threatened until Cristiano Ronaldo's long-range free kick was pushed away by the diving Huge Lloris.

Ronaldo also hit the post with a free kick before Frenchman Benzema, replacing Emmanuel Adebayor, avoided several challenges in the box and calmly slotted the ball into the net on 65 minutes.

Lyon equalised seven minutes from time when the ball looped off a defender from a free kick straight to the unmarked Gomis who scored from close range.

The second leg takes place at the Bernabeu on March 16.
