  Battu par Everton (0-2) la semaine dernière en championnat, Chelsea accueillait ce samedi Birmingham City en 8e de finale de la Cup avec comme objectif de se racheter. Objectif raté. L’équipe londonienne a enchainé avec une nouvelle contre-performance en concédant le nul (1-1), qui l’oblige à un « replay » dans 10 jours à Sant-Andrews. Un dénouement qui n’arrange pas les affaires d’André Villas-Boas, qui devient de plus en plus menacé à son poste de manager.

Le technicien portugais a pu mesurer à quel point sa côte de popularité était au plus bas lorsque les fidèles de Stamford Bridge se sont mis à scander le nom de José Mourinho. Le Special One étant pressenti pour faire son retour au club à partir de la saison prochaine. Toujours est-il que son jeune compatriote tremble désormais pour son futur et aurait s'inquiéter davantage, si Daniel Sturridge n’avait pas inscrit le but de l’égalisation juste après l’heure de jeu. D’une reprise de la tête, sur un service de Branislav Ivanovic, l’ancien de Bolton inscrivait sa 7e réalisation en six titularisations avec Chelsea en FA Cup. 

Jusqu’à ce but, Birmingham résistait solidement aux assauts des Blues. Les lauréats de la dernière Carling Cup s’accrochaient avec force à l’avance qu’ils ont pris en début du match lorsque David Murphy concrétisait brillamment leur belle entame de partie. Même privés de leur vedette Nikola Zigic, les visiteurs ont donc cru longtemps à l’exploit surtout lorsque Colin Doyle, leur gardien remplaçant, s’était opposé à un pénalty de Juan Mata (22e). Malheureusement, ils n’ont donc pas pu tenir jusqu’au bout. Ils pourront, cela dit, se consoler en disant que le « replay » aura lieu chez eux et que d’ici là, Chelsea va peut-être encore s’enfoncer dans ses doutes puisqu'un déplacement périlleux à Naples l'attend en Ligue des Champions.
