Money Time 2011 2012: Division One Norwich Manchester City and Manchester United Aston Villa

  Il y a une semaine, Manchester United semblait avoir titre gagné après avoir porté son avance sur Manchester City à huit points en tête de la Premier League. Le son de cloche pourrait être bien différent dimanche. Alors que City a fait le plein de points et de confiance en laminant West Bromwich Albion (4-0) puis Norwich City (1-6), United est descendu de son nuage avec une défaite à Wigan (1-0) mercredi. Les Red Devils n'ont plus que deux longueurs d'avance sur leur voisin au moment d'affronter Aston Villa (17h00) à Old Trafford. Tout autre résultat qu'une victoire des hommes de Sir Alex Ferguson relancerait définitivement la course au titre, et donnerait une dimension encore plus importante au derby entre les deux équipes le 30 avril à l'Etihad Stadium. 

 Même si Roberto Mancini, le manager des Citizens, a continué de dire que sa formation n'a plus aucune chance de remporter le titre après la victoire face à Norwich. "Je ne crois pas, a répondu le technicien italien à la question de savoir si sa formation peut encore être sacrée en fin de saison. Quand on lutte contre une équipe fantastique comme Manchester United, c'est impossible. C'est fini." Reste que Man Utd a subi un coup d'arrêt à Wigan. Après avoir signé onze victoires et un nul lors de leurs douze dernières sorties en championnat, les Red Devils ont réalisé l'une de leurs pires prestations de la saison chez les Latics, avec un seul tir cadré en 90 minutes. L'absence de Paul Scholes, laissé au repos par Sir Alex Ferguson, n'y était probablement pas étrangère. Depuis que Fergie l'a sorti de sa retraite, MU a remporté tous les matches que le milieu offensif mancunien a débuté. Il sera de retour face à Aston Villa. "Paul Scholes sera frais et jouera. Il a montré à quel point il était influent depuis qu'il est revenu, mais je crois que j'ai fait le bon choix en le laissant au repos mercredi", a estimé le manager écossais. Réponse au terme d'un match face à Villa qui aura son importance dans la course au titre. 

Indésirable depuis sept mois et une sévère explication avec son entraîneur Roberto Mancini, Carlos Tevez est de retour en grâce à Manchester City. Et ce ne sont pas les Citizens qui s'en plaindront. Déjà buteur mercredi face à West Brom (4-0), l'attaquant argentin a récidivé samedi face à Norwich (6-1), en ouverture de la 34e journée de Premier League. Et de quelle manière ! Une frappe puissante de ce dernier, dont la trajectoire a trompé le gardien adverse, John Ruddy, a d'abord permis à son équipe de se mettre sur de bons rails après un peu plus d'un quart d'heure de jeu (1-0, 18e). Sans démériter, le promu, dixième au classement et assuré de son maintien depuis sa victoire de lundi sur le terrain de Tottenham (2-1), encaisse rapidement un deuxième but sur lequel est encore impliqué le natif de Buenos Aires. A l'entrée de la surface, Sergio Agüero sollicite le une-deux avec son compatriote qui lui remet le ballon dans la course d'une subtile talonnade. L'ancien de l'Atletico fusille le dernier rempart adverse d'un tir à mi-hauteur (2-0, 27e).

De retour des vestiaires, les hommes de Paul Lambert, qui a pris les destinés du club du Norfolk en 2009, alors que celui-ci évoluait en League One, l'équivalent du National en France, réagissent. Sur un centre venu de la gauche, Joe Hart dégage du poing plein axe, directement sur Andrew Surman qui ne se fait pas prier pour envoyer le cuir au fond des filets d'une belle frappe (2-1, 51e). Mais, après quelques minutes de flottement, les joueurs de Norwich vont se rendre compte que le show Tevez-Agüero était encore loin d'être terminé. Sur un tir de Yaya Touré, repoussé par le gardien, Tevez s'élève plus haut que son vis-à-vis pour marquer de la tête (3-1, 73e). Dans la foulée, Agüero s'en va défier la défense adverse sur le côté gauche et inscrit son deuxième but dans cette rencontre d'un bel enchaînement crochet- frappe enroulée de l'entrée de la surface (4-1, 75e). Sur une passe en retrait mal assurée, Tevez s'offre ensuite un triplé (5-1, 81e). Après des mois sans jouer à ruminer dans son coin, L'Apache, de retour au meilleur moment pour City, qui ne compte désormais plus sur Mario Balotelli, auteur de l'écart de trop, peut alors céder sa place à Adam Johnson, qui ajoute un sixième but dans les arrêts de jeu sur une remise astucieuse de Gaël Clichy (6-1, 90e+2). Les Citizens décrochent ainsi un succès important qui leur permet de rester dans le sillage de leurs rivaux d'United en tête du classement et donc en course pour le titre de champion d'Angleterre. De son côté, MU reçoit Aston Villa dimanche et ne devra pas perdre de points en route, ni contre Everton le week-end prochain -City se déplacera dans le même temps chez la lanterne rouge Wolverhampton- pour espérer aborder le derby de Manchester, prévu le 30 avril, avec une avance confortable.

   Roberto Mancini concedes Manchester City's title hopes could be over by Sunday night. The long-time Premier League leaders have fallen five points behind their rivals Manchester United with just seven games remaining following a series of costly results in March. City could even be trailing by eight points by the time they kick off in their next match at Arsenal on Sunday if United beat Queens Park Rangers earlier in the day. Should that happen, and City then lose at the Emirates Stadium, Mancini would accept the race was over. "If we lose against Arsenal and they beat QPR – yes," said Mancini, when asked if that would be the case. But the Italian insists he is not thinking that way as he prepares for the crucial trip to north London. ity, who led the table by two points at the start of last month, have come unstuck in recent weeks after a defeat at Swansea and draws against Stoke and Sunderland. Mancini said: "I think always positive, I can't think this. Against Sunderland we didn't play very well, for me we were so flat in the first half. But we shot 25 times on goal, we had 65% ball possession. Sunderland shot three times at goal and scored three goals. "We did some mistakes defensively but we were unlucky. But now we can say nothing, we can't think about Sunderland. We should think positive for the next seven games. "I think it may be more difficult but it is my opinion that this championship is not finished." Mancini hopes supporters will keep faith and takes encouragement from the difficulties United have had in securing victories in recent games against Fulham and Blackburn. He expects his own team to beat United when they meet in their much-hyped derby at the Etihad Stadium on 30 April and believes they can still drop points elsewhere. He said: "Maybe, in this moment, there is someone that maybe doesn't believe because it is difficult, but we believe always. Also we should play a derby – the derby will be three points, and I think in six games they can lose other points."

Arsène Wenger believes Manchester United are poised to win the Premier League title as they are better equipped than their their neighbours City to cope with what he calls the "money time". The Arsenal manager opted for diplomacy when he described United as "not absolutely irresistible" but he has been impressed in recent weeks by their composure and knowhow when it has mattered the most. Wenger is in the position to dent City's hopes, which have suffered as they have taken five points from an available 12, when they visit the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and he suggested that Roberto Mancini's team could live to rue their lack of title-chasing instinct. "I believe this year the title at Man United, if they make it, is really down to experience," Wenger said. "What I mean by that is that on Monday night against Blackburn, when Giggs came on [in the 63rd minute], you thought: 'They can only win it now because they know how to deal with the money time.' That means the last 15 minutes in football when it is 0-0. Don't make a mistake. They have that security at the back. They have won so many titles because they are not nervous. "Basically for Man City, it is away from home because they have been outstanding at home. It is away from home they have lost a little bit. Man United is surprisingly there in a comfortable position. No one expected them to be. They didn't look absolutely irresistible this year and you could see that again at Blackburn. But they managed to win the game ." Wenger's focus is on his team's attempt to iron out the blip in their recent league form that was the defeat at Queens Park Rangers last Saturday but he did give thought to the question about Mancini's future were he to end the season without silverware, insisting it would be ridiculous for the Italian to be dismissed. "Yes, it would be," Wenger said, "because he is under contract. He has done a good job. He knows the squad ... although I'm not responsible for City's politics. They have to deal with their own problems and I deal with mine." One of those is the continued uncertainty about the prospect of Jack Wilshere making a comeback this season from his long-term ankle injury. Wenger said that the midfielder had to return by the end of the month if he wanted to prove his fitness for Euro 2012 with England. "We try to keep the hope alive for him and without taking too many risks," Wenger said. "That means we adapt day-to-day to manage him, to improve his physical state and get him fit as quickly as we can without taking too big a risk. That means when he has pain, we stop him. "To go to a big competition without having played at all is impossible. In the next four or five weeks we will know more and the next three weeks will be decisive. By the end of April you would think a player who wants to play in June … at the end of April, they will have to be competitive. The next three weeks will decide ."

Sir Alex Ferguson has hailed Manchester United's ability to score vital late goals as a "thread" running through the club's domination of the Premier League. On Monday evening Blackburn Rovers were defeated by two strikes in the last 10 minutes, from Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young. A Ryan Giggs 89th-minute winner at Norwich City in a 2-1 win and the comeback from three down at Chelsea to claim a draw earlier in the year also echoed late shows by Ferguson's teams in previous title-winning seasons. Ferguson said: "Over the years we've had these moments when we've scored late goals. You go back to '93 and Sheffield Wednesday, two goals in the last minutes [to win 2-1 on the way to their first Premier League title]. It's part of the history that we don't give in, we are capable of scoring late goals. And it's not an accident because there's a thread that relates to the club that way. It's been obvious for many, many years. You could point to the recovery at Chelsea and the Norwich game, or you could point to Monday night because with nine minutes to go it's 0-0. "But they don't give in. They kept their intensity and concentration really well and that was the plus point on Monday night." Ferguson highlighted Valencia and David de Gea for their performances in this crucial period. "Although we had all that retention of the ball, De Gea has had three fantastic saves. He has kept us in the game. And his form and his maturity is going to be key to us. He's been fantastic. His confidence is high. Every game he is getting better. "As far as Valencia's form – what can I say? He's been unbelievable since he's come back. Absolutely brilliant. If you have got players coming to form at this time of the season then it's bonus points. With players back, there's some freshness in the team at the moment so hopefully we can keep it going." Nani is available after recovering from an ankle injury and the Scot said he may rotate his squad to avoid fatigue. If United defeat Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon then Manchester City will be eight points behind when they kick off at Arsenal. "Well, Arsenal is a difficult place to go to," Ferguson said. "Even when they're not playing well it's always a difficult ground. If we can win our game on Sunday what it means to us is that we are still five points clear if City win and we're only one game less. We're down to six left. All you have to do is cut away the games." Ferguson denied Valencia needs an operation to remove a plate in his ankle in the close season. "I don't know where that story has come from. It's never been on the agenda or discussed. He has a plate in there and at the moment it stays there." After Roberto Mancini, the City manager, admitted he could have punched Mario Balotelli, Ferguson said he shared his exasperation and sometimes he felt like he could "strangle" players.

    Les Red Devils peuvent se frotter les mains. En cas de victoire lundi soir à Blackburn, Manchester United pourrait compter cinq points d'avance en tête de classement sur City et prendre ainsi une option sur le titre en Angleterre. Guère habitués à jouer le titre, les Citizens semblent effectivement en train de flancher dans le sprint final comme en témoigne leur match nul à domicile face à l'Etihad Stadium contre Sunderland (3-3).  Ce match semblait être une formalité pour Manchester City qui restait sur une série de quinze victoires à domicile en quinze match. Néanmoins, son adversaire du jour, Sunderland, avait déjà surpris les Citizens lors du match aller. Les coéquipiers de Stéphane Sessegnon s'étaient imposés dans les derniers instants du match (1-0). Et c'est avec la même envie que les Black cats abordent ce match face à City, dans son antre. 

 Les occasions alternent des deux côtés mais c'est bien les hommes de Martin O'Neil qui vont ouvrir le score. Sessegnon transperse la défense de City et trouve Larsson qui frappe au ras du poteau gauche de Joe Hart (0-1 31e). A quelques minutes de la pause, City va réduire le score grâce à un pénalty obtenu par Dzeko et transformé par Mario Balotelli (1-1 44e). Manchester City pense alors avoir fait le plus dur avant la mi-temps mais c'était sans compter sur l'ambition et la confiance de Sunderland. Sessegnon cette fois-ci sur le côté droit, centre dans la surface pour Niklas Bendtner. L'ancien Gunners place une tête parfaite qui laisse Joe Hart cloué sur sa ligne (1-2 48e).

Dès le retour des vestiaires, Sunderland continue sa marche en avant face à une équipe de City en demi-teinte. Les Black Cats vont alors en profiter pour accroitre leur avance. On retrouve une nouvelle fois Stéphane Sessegnon qui décale Bendtner. Le Danois centre à ras de terre au second poteau pour Larsson qui marque un double (1-3 55e). Avec ce retard, on a du mal à imaginer City revenir surtout que rien ne fonctionne au sein de la formation entrainée par Roberto Mancini. Balotelli et Kolarov se disputent sévèrement un coup franc alors qu'Adam Johnson passe totalement à côté de son match. Les minutes défilent et même l'entrée en jeu de Carlos Tevez ne semble pas pouvoir venir en aide des Citizens. Pourtant dansles dernières minutes du match, Balotelli va permettre à son équipe de croire à un retour. L'Italien sur la gauche repique au centre et frappe. Son tir légèrement contré trompe Mignolet (2-3 85e). Dans laminute qui suit, Kolarov fait vibrer tout un stade. Sur une frappe de loin le Serbe transperse toute la défense de Sunderland (3-3 86e). Malgré ce retour fou, City perd ses premiers points à domicile cette saison et laisse à United l'opportunité de prendre le large, lundi soir face à Blackburn. 

Après sa défaite surprise à Old Trafford au match aller face à Blackburn, Manchester United voudra se rattraper en s’imposant sur la pelouse de son adversaire, afin d’empocher au passage 3 points importants dans la course au titre. D’autant que les joueurs de Blackburn sont relativement inconstants cette saison, notamment à domicile, où ils ont déjà perdu à 9 reprises en 15 rencontres, ne réalisant qu’une seule fois le match nul. Face à eux, il y a tout simplement la meilleure équipe d’Angleterre du moment, notamment en déplacement, qui a remporté ses 6 derniers matchs de championnat et qui possède des statistiques très intéressantes hors de ses bases. En effet, les Red Devils ont remporté 11 de leurs 15 matchs en déplacement, en n’y concédant qu’une seule défaite.

Pour les deux places qualificatives restantes en C1, le suspense demeure même si Arsenal (3e) et Tottenham (4e) comptent une petite marge de sécurité sur leurs poursuivants. Sur une bonne dynamique, Arsenal a cependant flanché ce week-end en s'inclinant sur le terrain de QPR, relégable (2-1). A l'inverse, les Spurs de Redknapp ont mis fin à leur série de cinq matches sans victoire en s'imposant contre Swansea (3-1). Une victoire en partie due à l'efficacité d'Adebayor, auteur d'un doublé dans le dernier quart d'heure. Tottenham compte toujours cinq points d'avance sur Chelsea et Newcastle. Deux poursuivants qui se sont également imposés ce week-end : les Blues, derniers rescapés anglais sur la scène européenne, se sont imposés à Aston Villa (2-4) tandis que les Magpies ont enfoncé Liverpool (2-0). Un nouveau camouflet pour les Reds, qui sont désormais relégués au 8e rang, dépassés au classement par le rival d'Everton, vainqueur de WBA (2-0). Loin derrière la première partie de tableau, Wolverhampton s'est rapproché un peu plus de la relégation après son revers contre Bolton (2-3).
