Photo Comparison of the Week, Halloween Photo of Sharon, More on Tony Curtis, and a New Poem for Sharon

Here is our Photo Comparison of the Week:

Perhaps I should call this one a comparison of hair photo:

Madonna's hair is very "Valley of the Dolls" here.

Here is a lovely photo of Sharon to start the Halloween season off with:

Here is a new article on Tony Curtis mentioning "Don't Make Waves" and Arthur Penn (who also passed away recently).  Sharon almost worked with Penn on "Bonnie and Clyde" but lost the part to Faye Dunaway in the end.:

I found this poem today that reminds me of Sharon and all her beautiful clothes, her body, and even her disguises (like the black wig and clothes she wore on "The Beverly Hillbillies" or when she was so properly dressed and disguised as Freya in "The Wrecking Crew" :

Dressed By Brian Patten

Dressed you are a different creature.

Dressed you are polite, are discreet and full of friendships,

Dressed you are almost serious.

You talk of the world and of all its disasters

As if they really moved you.

Dressed you hold on to illusions.

The wardrobes are full of disguises,

The dress to be unbuttoned only in darkness,

The dress that seems always about to fall from you,

The touch-me-not dress, the how-expensive dress,

The dress slung on without caring.

Dressed you are a different creature.

You are indignant of the eyes upon you,

The eyes that crawl over you.

That feed on the bits you’ve allowed

To be naked.

Dressed you are imprisoned in labels,

You are cocooned in fashions,

Dressed you are a different creature.

As easily as in the bedrooms

In the fields littered with rubble

The dresses fall from you,

In the spare room the party never reaches

The dresses fall from you.

Aided or unaided, clumsily or easily,

The dresses fall from you and then

From you falls all the cheap blossom.

Undressed you are a different creature.

Remembering Sharon in Italy, A Way to Get Sharon's Stylish Hair and an OMG Photo of Sharon!!!

This comes from an email sent to me by a contributor here, Andrea.  She originally sent this back in May but I am just now getting back to some of my emails from when I was away.  She actually found some people who knew Sharon back in Italy:
Verona, Italy around the time Sharon would have been there.

I have the neatest story to tell. Last evening I was having dinner with my mom, my son Donovan and 2 of  my mom's long time friends, Joan and Chuck Naegel.

In conversation, Sharon was brought up and Mrs Naegel looked at me and said "We knew her."  Joan is very ill right now, and is undergoing chemotherapy , so I thought maybe she just meant she knew who she was.

She and Chuck said...."No Andrea , we knew her family. In 1961-1963 we were stationed in Italy and so were her parents. We went to a lot of parties and Sharon was always there. We remember her at the time dating one of the local veterinarians. She was so sweet and kind."
Another photo of Verona, Italy.

Joan says then, "Also, me and some other ladies would go over and have coffee with her mother sometimes...we all did that for each other. I remember her having younger sisters. I remember her mother being a little on the heavy side. Her father, was quite handsome."

I was about to lose my mind at this point. I have known these people since I was 12 yrs old when I played competitive softball with their daughter. My parents have remained close friends with them ever since.

I said 'I can't believe you never told me this.' But when I really got into Sharon again , they were out in Texas so it just was never brought up.
Sharon with school mates in Verona, Italy.

I asked them, "So was she as beautiful in person as they all say?"

They both looked at me and at the same time, they said "Almost too beautiful."

Even my 7 yr old son couldn't believe it !  My mom was cracking up because I was shaking as I was writing all of this down !

How cool is that !

As a footnote to this, sadly Mrs. Naegel has since passed away.  May she rest in peace.  Thanks so much to Andrea for sharing this wonderful story!

I found these two photos of actresses Scarlett Johansson and Lauren Conrad.  It reminded me of Sharon's style for 12 + 1 Chairs.  And on one of the websites it said to do this to get this look:
Scarlett Johansson

Lauren Conrad

Sharon in "13 Chairs" or "12 + 1" as it is also known.

Get the Look: Once you've curled everything with a large-barrel curling iron, section out bangs from the rest of your hair. Use the curling iron to "wing" the ends out. Set with hairspray.

Hope that helps the ladies out there who want to achieve that look!

And look at this OMG B-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l photo of Sharon!!!

W-O-W-!-!-!

Quote of the Week, Stealing Sharon's Style, Indian Company to Buy MGM? and Polanski's "The Ghost Writer" Wins Yet Another Award

Here is the quote of the week by Sharon herself:

"I guess I kind of lived in a fairytale world... looking at everything through rose-colored glasses. I probably always will, to a certain extent."

Stealing Sharon's style again?  You bet, another make up artist and hair stylist has admitted to using Sharon's signature look although he gets her decade wrong by saying she was a model in the 1970s.  Even though he made that mistake it is so nice to hear Sharon referred to as being an 'actress and model' instead of just 'murder victim.'

Here is the article, it's links and photos:

Stepping Back in Time by Georgia Collins

The 70s are alive and well here at Julien MacDonald. While Malcolm Edwards primps and preens models’ hair into Sharon Tate inspired teased bouffs, James Kaliardos is sculpting faces and adding false lashes by the dozen for doll-like wide-eyed innocence. Healthy and sexy but with a modern feel (it must be the clever contouring and airy feel to hair) it is an homage at its very best.

And it was news here:

http://www.graziadaily.co.uk/beautyreports/archive/2010/09/19/lfw-s-s-11-beauty-report--julien-macdonald.htm

LFW S/S '11 Beauty Report: Julien Macdonald

So if there was one look to choose from (so far) at LFW for wear-ability, achievability and all round gorgeous factor, it would have to be the look from Julien Macdonald. Make up artist James Kaliardos used two different foundations to contour and warm skin 'it's a Seventies tan!' James told us 'inspired by Sharon Tate, who was a gorgeous Seventies actress and model'. He glammed up eyes with l'Oreal Paris Chrome Intensity Metallic Brown on the eyes and added extra lashes just at the centre of the upper lash; 'just as Sharon did' and lips were uber-natural with a kiss of lip-toned lipstick. Though the look wouldn't have been complete without hairstylist Malcolm Edwards and his 'thatched root, airy ends' creation. Loosely pinned on top and bouncy all over, he described it as a 'modern sexy set'. Basically the hair we all dream of having!

The studio who owns Sharon's films such as "Eye of the Devil", MGM is in talks with an Indian Company that may buy the film empire:

Indian company in talks to buy MGM: report by Russ Britt

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch)  The beleaguered Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. studio may have found a buyer in Indian conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar, which is looking to pay roughly $2.4 billion for the venerable filmmaking brand, according to a media report Sunday.

The Journal said Sunday that Sahara is in exploratory talks for MGM, which faces a takeover from creditors next month as part of its bankruptcy proceedings, The Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition.

The studio was due to be taken over by Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, who oversee the production company Spyglass Entertainment, the Journal said. The two have signed a letter of intent to manage MGM after it climbs out of bankruptcy.

The Journal said MGM owes creditors $4 billion and Sahara was looking to pay 60 cents on the dollar for MGM's obligations, or roughly $2.4 billion. But it may have to fork over much more than that in order to interest creditors in the deal.

MGM is responsible for numerous classic films such as the ? "Wizard of Oz"? and ? "Gone With The Wind"? as well as the James Bond film series. For the last several decades, MGM has been passed around among a number of owners.

Here is the photo of the week:

I've always loved these Terry O'Neill pictures. ;)

I found this interesting Italian site that has some great hairstyles from the 60s that includes Sharon:

Sharon Tate: Glamour is a Personal Thing and British Vogue Summer's Beauty

Here is another great vintage article on Sharon from Melissa:

The Salt Lake Tribune Sunday September 25, 1966

By Lydia Lane

Glamour is a Personal Thing

Hollywood--"There are no set rules about glamour," Sharon Tate replied to my opening question.  "It is a personal thing, built around qualities you feel are your best.

"When your idea about yourself changes, your approach to glamour must change."

At the moment Sharon's glamour has a goal of naturalness.  "But don't let this I-don't-do-anything look deceive you.  There is no glamour without giving painstaking effort to every detail.  What little makeup I wear is applied so that every bit counts.

"When I was growing up I used to brush my lashes with petroleum jelly, and this stimulated their growth.  I keep them from breaking by always removing my mascara with special remover pads that come soaked in oil which I get at a drugstore."

For her complexion Sharon uses avocado oil which she buys in a health store.  "I like the way it makes my skin feel."

As a final step in building glamour Sharon recommends keeping your hair clean and well-brushed.  "I don't care for stylized hair designs.  All those pieces of artificial hair piled up often throw the body out of proportion and overpower the personality."

And here is another short article from British Vogue April 1, 1966:

Hair by Leighton above.

This Summer's Beauty Certainties

Romantic simple hairstyle for evening, left (on Tate), by Harold Leighton.   The hair is brushed smoothly back and tied with a starred almond pink chiffon scarf and rose.  The swish of hair that falls nearly to the waist is an eye-deceiving extra.  Scarf at Liberty.  At right, (last photo) Leonard gives the hair the full romantic treatment for summer evenings.  The hair, center-parted, is swept up, back and down; from the crown to the shoulders it falls in a thick smooth plait studded with camellias.  Heroine for the romantic hair-dos is Sharon Tate, blonde, 23, she recently finished filming in "I the Devil" (with David Niven, Donald Pleasance, Flora Robson, Emlyn Williams), is now working on "The Vampire Killers."

Here is the top part of the article above.

Funny, I never heard "Eye of the Devil" as "I the Devil".  Must be a miss-print or whoever took down the title didn't hear correctly.  But that's one thing that makes these tidbit articles so interesting and fun.  And I guess Sharon didn't mind artificial hair if it was done professionally for photo shoots.  One has to admit that when she was out on the town she did her hair in a much more simple way without any hair additions of any kind.
