Zurück in die Zukunft: Mit "Tron: Legacy" startet am 27. Januar die Fortsetzung des Cyber-Abenteuers "Tron", das 1982 als das Nonplusultra der noch jungen Computeranimation galt. Damals wurde Programmierer Kevin Flynn in das Innenleben eines Supercomputers gebeamt, wo er gegen diktatorische Programme antreten musste. In der Fortsetzung ist Kevin seit vielen Jahren verschollen. Doch sein erwachsener Sohn Sam bringt die verstaubte Kiste wieder zum Rappeln.

Durch einen mysteriösen Hinweis findet Sam den väterlichen Großrechner und gelangt ebenfalls in den nachtschwarzen Cyber-Kosmos. Er wird gekidnappt und soll als Spielfigur im Gladiatorenkampf verheizt werden. CLU, der Chef des Cyber-Zirkus, sieht aus wie der junge Kevin, den Sam vor vielen Jahren zuletzt gesehen hatte. Doch CLU ist ein von Kevin geschaffenes, abtrünniges Programm mit Welteroberungsplänen, das mit seinen Cyber-Armeen die reale Welt aufmischen will. Schließlich trifft Sam auch seinen richtigen Vater Kevin. Es geht ihm gut, er ist aber ziemlich virtuell.
Es rappelt in der Kiste
Auch Debütregisseur Joseph Kosinski konzentriert sich auf die unkuschelige retro-futuristische Kulisse - und lässt nebenbei das standardisierte Vater-Sohn-Programm laufen.
In unendlichen digitalen Arenen werden Wettkämpfe mit Neon-Frisbees und Motorrädern mit gleißendem Lichtschweif ausgetragen. Und in diesen schnittigen Actionsequenzen macht das 3D-Format - der Filmbeginn in der realen Welt ist zweidimensional - ästhetisch Sinn. Ansonsten greift Kosinski auf einschlägige Blockbuster zurück. Das Interieur des väterlichen Refugiums, ein cooler Mix aus französischem Landhausstil und 80er-Disco, erinnert an "Odyssee 2001".
Yoda-isiertes Update des Kultfilms.
Sogar ein "Völkermord" an "Isomorphen Algorithmen" steht auf CLUs Sündenregister. Immerhin wird das von einem würdigen Erlöser in Gestalt von Jeff Bridges versüßt, der bereits in "Tron" in den Schaltkreisen herumturnte. Dem Oscargewinner ("Crazy Heart") wird eine hübsche Hommage erwiesen: Er tritt sowohl als sein mittels "Performance Capture" modellierter jüngerer Wiedergänger wie auch als alternder Mann auf. Bärtig, barfuß, im weißen Wallehemd und total "Zen", gibt der Star mit Bierernst einen Second-Hand-Guru jener Sorte, die er in "Männer, die auf Ziegen starren" so wunderbar veräppelte.
Weitere Mitspieler sind der attraktive Garrett Hedlund als Sam und Serienstar Olivia Wild als ein à la "Das 5. Element" gestylte Naive. Michael Sheen (das weiße Kaninchen aus "Alice im Wunderland") gibt den weibischen Zeremonienmeister Zuse, der mal wie David Bowies "Ziggy Stardust", mal wie Julian Assange aussieht. Neben dem psychedelischen Neon-Look besticht auch der Soundtrack des Elektronik-Duos Daft Punk mit trancehaft wummendernden Bässen.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 -- LA Lakers' Kobe Bryant earned his 13th straight NBA All-Star selection for the Feb. 20 game at home court Staples Center Arena against LeBron James's East team, with injured Chinese center Yao Ming among the West starters.

The other starters for the Western Conference announced Thursday were New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul, forwards Kevin Durant of Oklahoma City and Carmelo Anthony of Denver.

James will lead the Eastern side with Miami Heat teammate Dwyane Wade, Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, forward Amare Stoudemire of the New York Knicks and point guard Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls.

With the NBA allowing fans to vote for the starters, Yao picked up 1.14 million votes to be voted in as a starter for the eight time despite his season-ending ankle surgery earlier this month.

The Houston Rockets player beat Lakers' rising star Andrew Bynum easily by more than 170,000 votes.

In 22 games with the reigning NBA champion Lakers, Bynum is averaging 11.4 points, and 7.5 rebounds per game, while Yao just played parts of five games.

The all-star game, however, allows the coaches to chose reserves. Yao's replacement will be announced next Thursday.

Nadal loses at quarter-finals, hopes over for 4 Slams in a row

MELBOURNE, Australia - Rafael Nadal's bid to win four straight Grand Slam tournaments is over.

An injury-affected Nadal lost for the second straight year in the Australian Open quarterfinals, going down 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday to fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.

Nadal, who appeared to have tears in his eyes during a changeover while trailing 3-0 in the third set, took a medical timeout for an apparent leg injury after three games and was clearly out of sorts, failing to chase down balls that he would ordinarily return easily.

"This is a difficult day for me," Nadal said, adding that he preferred to not talk about the nature of the injury.

"Today I can't do more than what I did, he played at a very high level."

When pressed about the injury, Nadal added: "I don't have to tell you what I felt on the court, but it is obvious I did not feel at my best. I had a problem with the match at the very beginning, and after that, the match was almost over."

It was the second year in a row he lost in the quarterfinals here due to injury - in 2010 he retired against Andy Murray due to a right knee ailment that kept him off the tour for two months, again on the Australia Day national holiday.

"This is one big victory for me, but it's not like a victory really," seventh-seeded Ferrer said on court after the match.

"He was playing with injury ... and I had luck. But I played my game."

Nadal, who didn't bother chasing the winner on match point, won last year's French Open, Wimbledon and US Open and was trying to add the Australian title so he could hold all four major trophies at once. That hasn't been achieved since Rod Laver won four in a row in 1969.

Nadal didn't want to elaborate on his injury, saying he didn't want to use injuries as an excuse when he lost matches.

"In general, I had a virus. When you have a virus, your body goes down and you have more risk of everything," he said of a sickness he picked up in Doha at the start of the year and carried into the tournament. "That's probably what happened. That's the simple thing."

The fireworks that would have lit up the tennis world had Nadal won his fourth in a row came Wednesday night during the match - Australia Day celebrations forced a 10-minute interruption while the sky outside Rod Laver was lit up by a pyrotechnics show.

As the fireworks exploded, Nadal changed his shirt and briefly left the stadium. He came back a couple of minutes later and took off his right shoe and rubbed his toes and sock.

After losing the second set, the usually fidgety Nadal slumped in his chair at the changeover, completely still with his head bent.

The crowd cheered almost exclusively for Nadal - "Come on, Rafa," - they roared, while often applauding Ferrer's errors.

All, eventually, for nothing.

Nadal picked up a virus two weeks ago. He sweated profusely in several of his matches, but appeared to be over his problems, saying after his fourth-round win over Marin Cilic that he was "perfect physically."

Murray won't have to get past Nadal this year, but he will have to beat Ferrer and either defending champion Roger Federer or 2008 champion Novak Djokovic to claim his first major title.

He advanced earlier Wednesday with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win over unseeded Alexandr Dolgopolov, after Kim Clijsters and Vera Zvonareva advanced to the women's semifinals.

I don't get to Williamsburg often, but when I do I head straight for Sideshow, Rich Timperio's gallery on Bedford Avenue. There's always a good show. Last time I mentioned the gallery, it was Thornton Willis's retrospective in 2007. This time it's It's All Good!! Apocalypse Now, a jumble of art by some 450 artists, up through February 20.
