Joe Hart is being wrapped in cotton wool by Manchester City after injuring his ankle in a challenge with Chris Smalling on Monday night, Goal.com can reveal.

The City goalkeeper’s ankle swelled up overnight and he was ordered by the club’s medical staff to elevate and rest the joint following extensive ice treatment.

It is understood that Hart did not take part in training on Wednesday as the club pursue a no-risk policy with their key players ahead of their final two matches of a season that could end with their first league title in 44 years.

Hart suffered the injury in the last minute of Monday’s 1-0 victory over title rivals Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium, when he clashed with Smalling in coming off his line to punch away a high ball.

The England No.1 is believed to be convinced that he will recover in time for Sunday’s match against Newcastle at Sports Direct Arena.

The goalkeeper has been outstanding for City this season, playing every minute of the club’s 36 league matches, as well as all 11 of their European fixtures.

He was rested by Roberto Mancini for the early rounds of the League Cup as well as the 3-2 FA Cup defeat to United in early January.
