What Are the SP2 Minimum System Requirements?

To install Windows XP Service Pack 2, your computer must have a CD/DVD drive or Internet connection and meet the following minimum requirements:
  • 233 megahertz (MHz) processor
  • 64 megabytes (MB) of memory
  • 2 GB of available hard disk space during installation
To determine whether your computer meets these requirements, from the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the General tab, under Computer, you will see your computer's processor speed and memory listed.
Note: If you wish to download and install SP2, but you are not using Internet Explorer, please visit the Download Center.
If you are running one of the following versions of Windows, you can update it with SP2:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 Note: If you install SP2 onto a computer running Windows XP Media Center Edition, your operating system is automatically upgraded to Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004.
  • Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition Note: If you install SP2 onto a computer running Windows XP Tablet PC Edition, your operating system is upgraded to Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005. After you install SP2 and restart your computer, the Welcome to Tablet PC window opens. It provides links to information about the new operating system, including tutorials.
To find out which version of Windows your computer is running, from the Start menu, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the General tab, under System, the Windows product and version number are listed.
You cannot use SP2 to update the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE, Windows Me, Windows NT® 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition Version 2003
  • Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
