Puyol will miss Euro 2012 with a knee injury, Barcelona confirm

The Spanish club have announced that their skipper will miss out on the showpiece event this summer after picking up a knock serious enough to omit him from the competition

Barcelona have confirmed Carles Puyol will miss Spain's Euro 2012 campaign as he requires surgery on his right knee, which will rule him out for six weeks.

The 34-year-old featured for the full 90 minutes in Barcelona's 4-0 La Liga win over Espanyol at the weekend, but complained about knee problems after the game.

Puyol underwent a number of tests on Monday to determine the extent of the knock, and Barcelona have now announced on their official website that Puyol will undergo arthroscopic surgery.

The veteran defender will miss Barcelona's last Liga match of the season against Betis due to the knee problem, while also missing out on the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao, and Euro 2012 with Spain.

Spain start their defence of their European Championship crown against Italy on June 10.
