Cup Winners Cup 1970 1971 Chelsea Real Madrid Both Games

Finals,
First match and Replay
May 1971

Chelsea beats mighty Real Madrid in Athens to take the European Cup-Winners' Cup in the replayed final, the fourth English side to do so. Real Madrid may no I be the force of old, but this was their ninth European final and they are still formidable Cup fighters. Chelsea owe their success largely to the motivation of Charlie Cooke in midf'ield. the brilliance of Peter Honetti in goal, and the determination that won them the FA Cup last season despite being out-plaved. They also had to overcome injury problems. In the semi-final, without strikers Hutch in son and Osgood, they beat holders Manchester City, themselves severely depleted by injuries, 1-0 in each leg to avenge an earlier defeat by City in the FA Cup.
They looked to have won the final at the first attempt. With an Osgood goal before he went off injured, but Zoco equalized for Real in the dying moments when Dempsey mis-kicked, and it was Chelsea who had to hold out in extra time. Dempsey made amends in the replay, slamming the ball in when his first headed attempt had been saved, and Osgood put Chelsea two up before again having to go off. Cooke, in at right-half for the injured Hollins, had another fine game and, although Fleitas scored for Real with lo minutes to go, they could not get past Bonetti again. Chelsea's triumph climaxed a remarkable season for London clubs, after Tottenham's League Cup and Arsenal's "double".

First Match
19 May 1971
Karaiskaki Stadium,
Athens
Attendance : 42.000

The final took place on 19 May 1971 and was staged at Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece, which was filled to capacity by traveling fans of both clubs as well as local football aficionados. Chelsea went ahead with a Peter Osgood left-foot volley from inside the area, after a Boyle-Cooke combination, but Real, demonstrating their "exceptional ball skills", pressed back and eventually equalised in the last minute with Ignacio Zoco . There were no further goals scored in extra time, so the final went to a replay game.
